Description

The Advanced Challenge

Course Goals

This advanced freediving course is the thorough way to achieve an advanced freediving certification.

Providing an additional a day of open water training to the minimum course duration, we aim to not only learn the skills, but also meet the standards for an advanced level like the AIDA3, or Apnea International Stage B.

This course addresses inherent risks of freediving when reaching depths beyond the scope covered in a beginner course and how to minimise these risks. Also, you will be introduced to training techniques in the pool and even on dry land that will improve your diving skills and make your dives more relaxed and enjoyable.

Schedule and Course Contents

Day 1: Classroom Sessions

The first days of the course we meet at 9:00 at our Centre where we start by getting any left paperwork out of the way and go on with the classroom training on day one and pool training on day two. We usually have lunch together at a restaurant around the corner and then continue with our training until approximately 17:00-18:00, depending on progress during the day.

  • Advanced freediving physiology
  • The (Mammalian) Dive Response (MDR)
  • Training concepts
  • O₂- and CO₂ training tables (see also the very relevant article The Evolution of CO₂ Training Tables)
  • The lungs at depth
  • Ascent-induced blackout (sometimes referred to as shallow water blackout)
  • The freediver as buddy and coach

Day 2: Pool Training

  • Warm-ups in the pool
  • Target dives in Static and Dynamic freediving
  • Buddying and coaching
  • CO₂-tables

Day 3: Open Water Training

Day three is the open water day. We meet at 9:00 at the small longtail-pier in Chalong (map here) and leave with a traditional longtail boat to the open water training site, which is about a 30 minute ride. We have two sessions with a break for water and a snack and return between 13:30 and 14:30.

  • Warm-up in the open water
  • Advanced Constant Weight diving
  • Efficient and safe turns
  • Buddying to depth
  • Self-rescue exercises
  • Advanced buddy rescue

Day 4: Open Water Training and Written Exam

As on day three, we go out to see to fine-tune and hone the skills from day one and add any that may not have met the certification standards. In the afternoon - after a lunch break - we meet at We Freedive HQ for the written exam.

Equipment

At this level, we highly recommend having your own equipment ready for the course. A minimal set consists of:

  • Low volume mask
  • Freediving fins
  • Wet suit (ideally a freediving wet suit)

Optional items are

  • Dive computer
  • Lanyard
  • Nose clip

If you want to buy your own set of equipment, you can do so at our shop, where we will be happy to help you choose the setup that works best for you.

Prerequisites

This course requires a beginner level certification, as it builds on the skills and knowlege of a foundation freediving course and adds further knowledge and skills that allow you to train effectively and efficiently and to achieve longer and deeper dives in a safe manner.

If you do not have a foundation certification, take a look at our foundation courses:

Certification

This course is fully certified to the standards of PADI, Apnea International, the Apnea Academy or AIDA

Related Training

At this level we highly recommend a certified level of first-aid qualification. To enrol in your first aid course or bring your helper skills up to date, take part in one of our
